Today was our final day to visit schools and interact with students and teachers. The entire day took place at the School N. 5. We were able to observe classrooms and interact with students, who were eager to speak to us in English and exercise their skills. I sat in on a math class, in which I observed direct instruction, with students working on the board at times. I then attended an English class and students asked us questions. I also went outside and spent time in an art workshop, where students were working on a variety of projects. We also took time to talk to the director of the school about various topics, such as teacher hours and LGBT issues. I was informed that because Uruguayan society is so progressive and accepting there is not even a pride parade, only a "diversity" parade. Being gay is accepted in Uruguay and there is not a big deal made of it pro or con, especially amongst the younger generation. We also spoke about student advocacy and teacher unions and I gathered that although they do have unions and make demands, the system does not really bother them and although teachers work night and day it is the norm. We ended our last day of classes with a teacher meeting where we fielded questions that ranged from salaries, schedules and unions to what our opinion was of the Uruguayan way. I have ultimate respect for these dedicated professionals and have much to ponder in the coming months as I unpack my experience here.
